The Future of Cities - Learning from Asia

Location: Architekturzentrum Wien - Podium
Congress: 12 November 1999 - 14 November 1999

Correlating with key words such as globalisation, international networking and rapid growth, the Asian metropolis has crystallised out of the urbanism debate as the new focal point. The pressure of condensation of growth in cities evoked by the rapid economic rise in East Asia offers broad projection areas for visions and renewal, which are however burdened by both the myth of the unknown and exotic as well as laden with fear.

The 7th Viennese Architectural Congress takes another look at the cultures and traditions and their influence on the historical developments and social structures of everyday experience in Asian cities. It discusses the effects of the direct and indirect influence of colonialisation and of the handling of cultural identity. Necessary new positioning in the East-West conflict is also placed in the center of importance as well as questions of border demarcations between the public and private, the inner and outer realms and the role of architecture and mass culture as instruments of control. Architects and theorists discuss 5 different cities which create a view into Asia’s diversity and examine the phenomena of their velocity, density, and traditions.
