A panel discussion at the Az W marks the publication of the revised and expanded new edition of the book Architecture in Austria in the 20th and 21st Centuries, which provides an evaluation of architecture in its contemporary context. How is a selection made? What will also be relevant for the future? Who writes the history of architecture?
The book:
The long sold out catalogue to the permanent exhibition at the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) on the Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries has been revised and expanded, now featuring almost 100 new projects, to become an independent work that goes well beyond the exhibition “a_show”. It is not only the product
of a contemporary perspective on the discourse and canon of values of Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries, it is also documentation of the scope and uniqueness of the Az W collection on the subject. Extensive images and plans as well as explanatory texts describe and illustrate historical relationships as well as current trends. A Timeline, a survey of the Print Media relevant to architecture since 1836, Biographies and an Index make the book an indispensable reference work, underscoring Friedrich Achleitner’s dogma for Architectural Sciences that “Evaluations of architecture are to be viewed
in a context of the time concerned.”
