Already for the fourth time – and that at intervals of three years –in collaboration with the Architekturzentrum Wien the Österreichische Postsparkasse is organising the Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis. The aim was to select urban development projects and completed buildings that are making a distinguished contribution to the urban culture of our country.
The jury has been chaired each time by a major international architect (Jacques Herzog in 1995, Sir Norman Foster in 1998, Nicholas Grimshaw in 2001) who has provided an insight into their position with an accompanying lecture for the Austrian Postsparkasse bank in the Otto Wagner building. In 2004 the chair was held by the French architect Dominique Perrault, who achieved international renown with the completion of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris.
Significant major projects have also been completed in Austria under his leadership, such as the town hall in Innsbruck or the reworked master plan as the basis for the remaining sites in the Vienna Donau City. With a setting that is part of Otto Wagner's historical legacy, the award ceremony and Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis 2004 exhibition opening is being held in the central banking hall of the main building of the Austrian Postsparkasse bank.
