Urban Planning under the Nazi Regime Location: Architekturzentrum Wien - New Hall Lecture: Wednesday 26 March 2008, 6pm Tickets: Admission free! Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Linz, Nuremberg... all cities that have strong ties to a history of town planning by Hitler's regime. However the projects mapped out alongside the major replanning of the 'Führer's Cities' are, however, significantly less well-known. These include comprehensive new designs planned for the regional capital of Vienna that were completed following the 'annexation' of Austria in 1938. In the contest for control of town planning between communal interests and those of the German Reich, centralised control was finally implemented with the appointment of Berlin architect Hanns Dustmann to the building authorities in 1940. Within a short space of time, comprehensive redesign projects had been drawn up that would have radically altered the face of Vienna.
