School-goers know their own schools from everyday experience. The classroom is a second home for at least five half-days during the week. Are we aware of the architecture that surrounds us and that we seem to take for granted? We take a closer look together. Does the school's structure work? What is the thinking behind it?
Usually it's schoolchildren themselves who know what works best, what functions properly and where deficiencies lie, but they are seldom given an opportunity to talk about or realise their own ideas. The concept for architecture in schools (Architektur in der Schule) provides a range of modules that use the familiar classroom setting as the departure point for a voyage into design.
We talk about the history of school building on location. The space is analysed and measured, to be rediscovered and redesigned with the aid of various techniques used in the production of architecture. When the schoolchildren analyse a space that they know well, architecture becomes a matter of first-hand experience.
