Following the introduction of the award in 1995 and in accordance with the original concept of three yearly intervals, the Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis is to be awarded for the fourth time on 2 November 2004. New Austrian urban development projects were submitted for the 4th Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis in an open competition to find offensive new approaches to the problems of urban development for a society in a permanent state of change.
The jury convened on 7 October to assess 28 projects and nominate a prize-winner and the runners-up. The entries provided a representative survey of the current state and contemporary development of urban planning in Austria. In general terms, the submitted projects fell into three very different basic categories: Building/Landmarks, Urban Strategies and Projects in Development.
Following extensive discussions and taking all of the arguments into consideration, under the chair of the French architect Dominique Perrault, the jury set a precedent by awarding the Otto Wagner Städtebaupreis to two projects jointly. The total of 15.000,- Euro prize money is being donated by the Österreichische Postsparkasse.
