BOGDAN BOGDANOVIĆ. The Doomed Architect 05.03 – 02.06.2009 | opening: 04.03.2009 Bogdan Bogdanović, born in 1922 in Belgrade, is not only the leading architect of memorials in the former multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia but also an unconventional urbanist, essayist and writer who "built to be able to write, and wrote so that he could build". Between 1951 and 1988 Bogdanović completed over twenty memorials throughout Yugoslavia to commemorate the victims of fascism and anti-fascist resistance fighters. Free from ideological insignia and clearly removed from the taste dictates of the socialist state, these archaic feeling architectural ensembles invite visitors to linger in contemplation. Bogdanović's poetic and pathos free treatment of sites of destruction are manifested, above all, in the Jasenovac flowers, which stand on the site of what was once a concentration camp. There are over 12,500 works by the architect in the Az W Collection, including both working designs and surrealist fantasies. Now it is possible to show and follow the working methods and thinking of this 'architecture esoteric' for the first time in one comprehensive show. A catalogue is being published to accompany the exhibition (German only): 'Bogdan Bogdanović. Memoria und Utopie im Tito-Jugoslawien'.
WONDERLAND: 100 MODELS — 100 STORIES 18.06 – 06.07.2009 | opening: 17.06.2009 An exhibition project on the status quo of European competitions, by Wonderland in collaboration with KÈK, the Hungarian society for the mediation of architecture.
Models from architecture competitions are the architect's most radical expressions as they represent purely architectural thinking. Hundreds of architecture models by hundreds of architects' offices throughout Europe are on show in this exhibition. An analysis of the individual paths taken by each project after the competition concerned provides posits on the future situation of European competitions. Wonderland is realising this project with the Hungarian mediation society KÈK, the Austrian Bundeskammer der Architekten und Ingenieurkonsulenten (bAIK) and the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) — special working group for architectural design competitions.
Call for Models A call for models is being issued in February 2009 with an accompanying questionnaire on the European competition situation in Europe. A jury is to adjudicate the projects submitted, and select 100 models for the show. A special issue of Wonderland Magazine is being published to accompany the exhibition.
GERIATRIC PROJECTS September 2009 Six new geriatric centres are scheduled for completion in Vienna by 2015. An show at the Az W in Autumn 2009 presents ten planned and/or completed projects. A symposium on the topic and related issues is planned as a supplementary event, while Franziska Leeb is working on a publication to accompany the exhibition.
BALKANOLOGY. NEW ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PHENOMENA IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE 22.10.2009 – 18.01.2010 | opening: 21.10.2009 An exhibition in cooperation with the S AM — Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum, Basel
With the dissolution of the socialist economic system in former Yugoslavia and Albania informal building is emerging in the western Balkans that represents an entirely new form of urbanisation. This poses the question as to the extent to which the pattern of these urban remodellings indicates a future development of the European town. The exhibition, on show at the S AM until 28.12.08, presents approaches taken by architects, urbanists and activists to these rapid processes of urban transformation, exemplified by projects in Belgrade, Zagreb, Kotor, Prishtina and Tirana. The exceptional but little known buildings of modern socialist Yugoslavia are positioned in a dialogue with these rapid processes of urban transformation. The exhibition Balkanology opens up a new arena, casting light on the little known architecture of post-socialism along with the result of unregulated, uncontrolled urban development in the states of southeast Europe. The focus of the exhibition is on the most recent socio-political changes and their impact on architecture and urban development.

EUGEN WÖRLE (1909–1996). FACETS OF A VIENNESE MODERNITY 19.03 – 06.04.2009 | opening: 18.03.2009 With the exhibition to mark the 100th birthday of Eugen Wörle, the Architekturzentrum Wien pays homage to one of the great personalities of Viennese architecture. Trained under Clemens Holzmeister at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Wörle entered into a working partnership with the former Max Fellerer, a student of Hoffmann. The result was, inter alia, numerous retail outlets and commercial buildings, the hotel am Tulbingerkogel, the Haashaus and, his best known building to this day, the Am Gänsehäufel outdoor bathing facility. During the postwar reconstruction Wörle/Fellerer were commissioned with the restoration of the Parlament building, where his sensitive handling of the historical substance and his 'discrete' and elegant redesign of the assembly chamber clearly show his approach to architecture. Wörle adhered to a pragmatic modernity that always reacted to the existing situation. In 2007 the Zentralvereinigung der Architekten Österreichs, of which Wörle had long been the president, donated his archives to the Az W. This exhibition should now provide insights into the oeuvre of Eugen Wörle on the basis of selected projects, and stimulate an updated look at his work.
DAS BESTE HAUS 2009 30.04 – 18.05.2009 | opening: 29.04.2009 The architecture prize for the 'best house' is being awarded for the third time in a competition launched by the s Bausparkasse in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture as well as the Architekturzentrum Wien and in collaboration with the regional Austrian architecture institutions. The quality of the projects submitted in 2005 and 2007 and the press response have proven that this prize provides lasting inspiration for initiatives developed around the home, and that new concepts for single-family houses are to be found in the existing and continuing development of the countryside. The aim of the award is to find and honour the best single-family or multi-family dwellings in Austria. The exhibition encompasses the nine prize-winning projects, one from each of the federal states, and a selection of nominated projects.
