Exhibition: Nov. 02, 1998 - Nov. 27, 1998 Opening: Monday, Nov. 02, 1998, 07:00 pm
The judging session and the selection of the winner took place on October 16, 1998 under the chairmanship of Sir Norman Foster. The criterion for the 2nd Otto Wagner prize for Urban Planning was the offensive and fundamentally new discussion on urban development: the problem of living and working and the feasibility of immaterial communication; the problem of town and the surrounding countryside with the intention of concentration and the need for space and landscape. The winners had to be selected out of the total 71 entries submitted.
The standard of submitted projects on urban planning appealed for high quality architecture. Sir Norman Foster¹s professional discernment orientated towards international standards was the decisive factor when judging became a difficult task. The long lasting half-life of projects on urban planning raised many a study of the 1st award for Urban Planning.
Thus the honorable-mention of the ²Alten Flugplatz Aspern² by Rüdiger Lainer as one of the last large master plans in the area of Vienna leads up to this year¹s winning project: ²Homeworkers² by BUS Architektur Awards Homeworkers Living and working at the Donaufelder Straße BUS ARCHITEKTUR Laura Spinadel, Claudio Blazica, Rainer Lalics Assistants and experts:Mladen Jadric, M. El Khafif, K. Nabielek, C. Nuhsbaumer, G. Müller, Traffic engineering: Werner Rosinak Structural engineer: Pachler Engineering of technical equipment: Vienna ÖKO System Construction-related physics: Pfeiler 'Homeworkers' is a pilot project for increasingly spreading future ways of life trying to combine living and working within a dense, multifunctional city. 'Homeworkers' as well as the honorable mention project 'Die konkrete Utopie-Strukturelemente der Stadt' by Mascha and Seethaler have already been presented at the Architekturzentrum Wien within the 'Milleniumworkshop' initiated and conceived by Rüdiger Lainer in 1996. Especially impressive among the large number of high quality entries was 'Homeworkers' translating theory into realisable practice. The fundamental aspect of this entry, transcending the conception was a more differentiated dealing with utilisation, function and density.
10 further projects are honorable mentions and can be visited until Friday, December 4 incl. during the opening hours of the bank. Sir Norman Foster is going to present his personal view on architecture and urban planning in a long lecture given at the banking hall of the Austrian Postal Savings Bank at the beginning of 1999. 2.
