Johannes Spalt celebrated his 90th birthday on 29 September 2010. The Architekturzentrum Wien honoured the occasion with a book on his life's work — 'Wahlverwandtschaften / Elective Affinities', published by Residenz Verlag. The presentation to mark his 90th birthday was held at the Az W on Wednesday 29.09.
Johannes Spalt was one of the key proponents of the Austrian architecture scene after 1945. Educated under Clemens Holzmeister at the Academy of Fine Arts, Spalt was early to feel drawn to Adolf Loos and Josef Frank following an intensive engagement with the International Modern Movement. His lifelong "thinking with history" resulted in an undogmatic oeuvre whose pluralistic approach frequently manifested itself in a specifically Austrian combination of tradition and modernity. His continual preoccupation with themes such as mobile furniture, housing, small architecture (including the 'Salettl' pavilion) is a feature of his architectural work.
In Spring 2010 Johannes Spalt's collaborations with Wilhelm Holzbauer and Friedrich Kurrent were on show at the Architekturzentrum Wien in the exhibition 'x projects by arbeitsgruppe 4. Holzbauer, Kurrent, Spalt (1950–1970)'.
