The Architekturzentrum Wien presents the completely overhauled permanent exhibition 'a_show. Austrian Architecture in the 20th and 21st Centuries' in the exhibition space 'Neue Halle'.
In relation to the country’s size Austria today has a particularly rich and lively architecture scene. Eight years after the opening of the permanent exhibition, 'The Present' has been renovated so that it lives up to its name. The episode 'Present' has been brought up to date and shows around 200 projects by more than 170 architects’ offices from all nine Austrian federal states. The digital presentation on two monitors presents a richly diverse spectrum of current positions, protagonists and projects across the whole of Austria. It ranges from mountain shelters and mountain peak platforms to low-budget interventions in public space and various forms of housing and to headquarter buildings and cultural centres.
In 2005 the Architekturzentrum Wien opened a permanent showcase for the cultural identity of the nation, the 'a_show'. The imaginative use of 300 square metres provides an in-depth presentation of 150 years of impressive domestic architecture history. The division into 10 episodes (Prologue, Red Vienna, Landscape, Power, Reconstruction, International, System, Utopia, Collage and Present) focuses the viewer's attention on the most relevant phenomenon and currents. The chronological succession of certain phases in the development of architecture are covered and highlighted under specific headings. Plans, sketches, texts, photographs, models and film footage bring the 20th century to life as they lead the viewer into the present.
