EXHIBITION: 18.12.2014 – 23.02.2015
OPENING: Wed, 17.12.2014, 7pm
PRESS CONFERENCE: Wed, 17.12.2014, 11am
In February 2014 a project by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld won the architecture competition for the site around the Eislaufverein (ice-skating association) in Vienna and became the subject of an animated discussion. Following the announcement of the competition results the Architekturzentrum Wien is pleased to be able to present the prize-winner to the public with an exhibition of his selected work.
“I always try to design everything in my profession: if I design a house, I design the interiors, the bell, everything. I see architecture as a whole thing, as if I was an art director. The idea expresses my wish to design from the beginning of life to the end.” Isay Weinfeld
The exhibition “A to Z. The World of Isay Weinfeld” illustrates the philosophy of this renowned architect in a most impressive manner. The wide range covered by his work results from his insatiable curiosity, from a constant urge to try out something new and from his conviction that willingness to expand one’s horizons is decisive in creating good architecture. In the Az W a cross-section through the work of Isay Weinfeld will be presented: ranging from furniture and design objects (including the lounge chair “Poltrona Isay” or the bar “Carrinho Bar Toto”), designs for the interiors of various shops and restaurants (including Forneria San Paolo and Livraria da Vila) to single-family houses (among them Casa Yucatan and Casa Piracicaba), as well as projects from the areas of residential and office buildings (including Edifício 360°, 2009 and the Edifício Oka, 2012 – both received the MIPIM AR Future Projects Award) and to the design of public open space (Praça da Amauri).
Weinfeld‘s exhibition design selectively points out certain details – like an ascending staircase or a building entrance, without showing the respective project in its entirety. This form of presentation is augmented by atmospheric short films made by Weinfeld about his various projects. An Instagram installation and the film “Fogo e Paixão” / Fire and Passion (BR, 1988, 90 min), which Isay Weinfeld made together with Marcio Kogan, offers an insight into his film and photographic work.
As a film-maker Isay Weinfeld attaches particular importance in all his projects to the narrative element and to orchestration. In the exhibition conceived for the Architekturzentrum Wien he takes the visitors with him on a journey through the universe of his creativity – from the door handle to the office building, from the stage set to the interior of a McDonald’s, from the Instagram installation to the fruit bowl, from the cradle to the coffin – from A to Z.
ON THE PERSON ISAY WEINFELD
“You know, I don’t think all that much of architecture in which the author sees himself as a genius. I am simply just a good listener who has the ability to transform what I hear into a building. And I am a damned good listener.” Isay Weinfeld
Already two years before completing his architecture studies at the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (1975) Isay Weinfeld (who was born in 1952 in São Paulo) founded his own architecture practice and from the very start attracted attention through the wide range covered by his creative work. Today he is not only among the most sought-after contemporary Brazilian architects but is also successful in the areas of exhibition design, stage set, furniture and object design and, in particular, as a film-maker. His work is characterized by a keen sensitivity for materiality, surfaces and atmosphere, a sensitivity that is reflected in the quality of the details. Weinfeld seems to effortlessly unite apparent opposites: the tropical with the modern, the playful with the reduced, and the minimalist with the sophisticated. Like almost no-one else he has succeeded in developing a sensitive, elegant and modern architectural style with a Brazilian stamp. Isay Weinfeld draws his inspiration from films such as those of Stanley Kubrick or Ingmar Bergmann, from music by Radiohead or Jay-Z, and from the visual arts. At the same time he emphasizes that the most important inspiration for each project – and the main reason for their uniqueness – always comes from the client him or herself.
