Max Fabiani. Architect of the Monarchy 22.10.2015 – 30.11.2015, ALTE HALLE OPENING: WEDNESDAY, 21.10.2015 | 7 PM On 1 May 1865 Emperor Franz Joseph officially opened the Ringstraße in Vienna. In 2015 Vienna is celebrating this boulevard’s 150th birthday. 1865 is also the year in which Max Fabiani was born and in this anniversary year the Az W is delighted to present an exhibition about one of the fathers of modern architecture in Vienna. Even before Max Fabiani worked with Wagner he had designed pioneering buildings in a functionalist modern style for instance the premises of Portois & Fix in Ungargasse and the building for Artaria Verlag on Kohlmarkt. With his Urania building erected in 1910 Fabiani demonstrated both modernity and a willingness to compromise. In urban planning terms this early adult education building and observatory marks the end of the Ringstraße.
