Annual Press Conference 2016 EXHIBITIONS kulturhauptstadt2024.at 1000 arguments for and against the Capital of Culture project Exhibition: 14.01. – 01.02.2016, Old Hall Opening: Wed, 13.01., 5pm In 2024 Austria is to provide a European Capital of Culture for the third time. After Graz2003 and Linz09, a study has been undertaken by 100 students and 25 teaching staff from 8 Austrian universities to see which town should stand in the European spotlight this time, the opportunities and risks involved with a nomination, and ways to rethink the European Capital of Culture. Following successful presentations at venues in Graz, Bregenz and Innsbruck, the results are to be presented in the capital city, Vienna. The touring exhibition presents 44 student projects: 19 projects dedicated to the Capital of Culture concept, possible candidate towns and Capital of Culture processes, 12 further projects shed light on the subject of the European Capital of Culture from an artistic perspective. In addition, 13 video projects were completed. The scope of the design projects ranges from the complete rediscovery of the European Capital of Culture concept, via the development of new application processes, to drafting future scenarios for individual towns and regions as the Austrian Capital of Culture 2024. In the course of the intense engagement with the topic, students have worked on 1000 arguments for and against the Capital of Culture project, which are now being shown for the first time, in Vienna. PICTURING ARCHITECTURE AND THE CITY Exhibition: 10.03. – 17.05.2016, Old Hall Opening: Wed, 09.03., 7pm | Press conference: Wed, 09.03., 11 am There is a radical shift underway in the responsibilities of contemporary architecture. Architectural photography plays a key role as a medium of communication and presentation between architects, clients and the general public. Ongoing global urbanization and growing problems caused by migration and social inequality have become focus points for more and more photographers who are documenting the changing realities and their impact on the living, working and lifestyle conditions of humanity. The exhibition by the Architekturmuseum/TU München is being adapted for the Az W in a slightly smaller format. ‘Zoom!’ features photographs and video works by thirteen contemporary international photographers whose focus lies beyond images aimed at representation. The images focus on the depiction of the traces of the mutual interdependence between society and architecture when the construction firms have left the site, or the way that urban and village structures are changing through the population and its social and cultural fabric, or economic factors. The juxtaposition of images from different countries and continents — from Italy to Mexico and China — encourages comparisons. SUPPORTING PROGRAMME FOR THE EXHIBITION “ZOOM!” The Power of (Architecture) Photography “...architecture photography doesn’t just depict the cultural, economic and political context, but actively helps to shape it” – a panel discussion on the one hand about the theme of the exhibition, on the other about the recent publication “On the Uses of Architecture Photography”. Wednesday, 13.04.2016 Flight from the Country, Exodus from the City On the basis of two projects shown in the exhibition, the theme of “Flight from the Country“ is discussed, along with changes in consumer behaviour and the impact that these have on town and village centres. Wednesday, 11.05.2016 EUROPE'S BEST BUILDINGS. THE EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD 2015 Exhibition: 09.06. – 29.08.2016, Old Hall Opening: Wed, 08.06., 7pm | Press conference: Wed, 08.06., 11 am The Mies van der Rohe Award, today one of the most prestigious architecture prizes competed for in Europe, was launched in 1987 by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe — Barcelona. With the award, grants are awarded every two years totalling 80,000 EUR (Winner: 60,000 EUR, Emerging Architect Special Mention: 20,000 EUR). The key aim is to provide recognition and critical acclaim for exceptional achievements in the field of architecture within Europe. Projects are awarded prizes whose innovative character serves as orientation, even as manifestos, for the development of contemporary architecture. The award is intended to promote the profession and as encouragement for architects at the outset of their careers. Both prizes, the main grant and the Emerging Architect grant, are awarded for exceptional achievements in conceptual, technical and structural terms. Five finalists were selected from the 420 projects nominated by European institutions and international experts in 2015 — the eminent members of the jury were ultimately most convinced by the Szczecin Philharmonic by the office of Spanish architects Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga. The Emerging Architect Special Mention Award goes to ARQUITECTURA-G for the Casa Luz project in Cilleros, Spain. IN THE END: ARCHITECTURE. THE LAST 50 YEARS Exhibition: 06.10.2016 – 20.03.2017, Old Hall Opening: Wed, 05.10., 7pm | Press conference: Wed, 05.10., 11am To mark the retirement of founding director Dietmar Steiner, the Az W is dedicating a major exhibition to the current architectural status quo and its roots in architecture history. The exhibition takes stock of many of the developments in the field over recent decades — from technological and digital innovations via the strong shift of the architect's role in a market of large planning offices with global operations, to small, hardly visible, socially engaged architectural initiatives. The upshot of all this is that architecture has reached a pivotal moment, a fork in the road with specific implications for the future. We need to look at the past in order to contextualise and explain the present: For each chapter in the exhibition we pursue the traces of the past and show events that have impacted on the history of architecture with repercussions for the present. Each of these explorations the past pursues an independent narrative, and together they span the architecture of the last 50 years — whereby the "failure" of the Modernist project and the ensuing profound crisis in architecture represents the starting point. The exhibition is an appraisal as well as an account, and closely tied to the biography of Dietmar Steiner. It is a subjective reflection of events in the world of architecture in Vienna over the last 50 years, providing a context for the current status quo. Proclamations of "the end of architecture" have been coming for 50 years, but it is in the hands of the players concerned to influence what happens next. The 20th Vienna Architecture Congress is being held to accompany the exhibition, which is to be an assembly of the key architecture theorists and architects of recent decades in a large get-together at the Az W, inspired by the famous Charlottesville Conference in November 1982. AZ W PHOTO AWARD 2016 — I LOVE ARCHITECTURE To accompany the exhibition „In the End: Architecture. Alongside the prizes awarded by the jury, for the first time there is also a public vote on Facebook 20TH VIENNA ARCHITECTURE CONGRESS A three-day congress is being held to accompany the exhibition „In the End: Architecture. The Last 50 Years“. Fri 18.11 – Sun 20.11.2016 A_SHOW. AUSTRIAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURY PERMANENT EXHIBITION, NEW HALL The updated permanent exhibition “a_show” offers a comprehensive overview of the development and history of Austrian architecture in the 20th and 21st century. 150 years of building history are presented in a variety of ways that cover their complexity. 10 episodes focus attention on the most relevant phenomena and tendencies. In this way the chronological sequence of certain phases in the development of architecture is defined in terms of content and illuminated from specific thematic viewpoints. In addition a new Kids Corner will be opened in the a_show. Visitors big and small are invited to grasp architecture with all their senses. THIS IS HOW ARCHITECTS LIVE – FOUR EXAMPLES Exhibition: 10.11. – 05.12.2016 | Hall F3 Opening: Wed, 09.11.2016, 7 pm In the context of the Month of Photography 2016 In numerous photos architecture photographer Christoph Panzer recorded the (studio) dwellings of four Austrian architecture personalities Franz Kiener, Hans Puchhammer, Johannes Spalt and Ottokar Uhl. These photographic historical documents allow us immerse ourselves in the architects’ world of life and work, while also providing information about a piece of Austrian architectural and cultural history. |
