The architEXCURSIONs 2003 are offering a summer programme of things architectural for curious town-dwellers and roving researchers of all nationalities and ages. This year everything is revolving around plans for Vienna. In the exhibition '5,000,000m3 Vienna. The New Large-Scale Projects', 16 of the most significant architecture and urban development projects are being presented that are either underway or already in the final phase of completion and which are to leave a lasting and impressive mark on the city of Vienna. As a supplement to the exhibition the summer tours are to provide insights in situ and, due to the large demand, to provide 2 glimpses back at a couple of modern classics: the Postsparkasse (Otto Wagner) and the Haus am Michaelerplatz (Adolf Loos). In the '[RE]build Vienna' workshop children aged 6 and over will have an opportunity to explore the City of Vienna as part of the Stadt Wien's fsp programme (Ferienspiel – vacation game), and to realise their own ideas and visions hands-on.
Exhibition 5,000,000m3 Vienna. The New Large-Scale Projects
Wednesday, July 23, 2003, 07:00 pm: Panel discussion 'Building In Vienna' (to be held in German) followed by the opening of the exhibition.
Vienna 2003: It looks as if the collective subconscious of this city has suddenly managed to come up with a vision. As happened about ten years ago when a new Gründerzeit was declared in Vienna, today we once again find ourselves in a situation where an enormous number and diversity of projects of varying standards are being planned that will have far reaching effects in terms of urban development, and so which are forming the future face of this city. We have counted a total of 5 million cubic metres, all of which are going to enrichen Vienna. With visionary plans by Baumschlager & Eberle, BUS Architektur, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Dietrich I Untertrifaller, Günther Domenig, Dominique Perrault, Hans Hollein, Wilhelm Holzbauer, Heinz Neumann, Gustav Peichl and many more. Projects have primarily been selected that provide the most varied of functions (in the areas of infrastructure, service, events and culture), with a potential to act as strong magnets for their respective urban environments. Some of these projects have been proposals for a long time, others are new and largely unknown. This survey is, for the first time, to provide an opportunity to grasp the full extent of these projects. For only then can one appreciate the full daunting extent of the pending urban development of Vienna over the next few years.

They are pursuing the themes involved and begin with an informative general overview of the projects on show in the exhibition, to then go and inspect the proposed sites and the progress in construction work directly – with an image of the way the projects are to look in the visitors' minds and the information sheets in their hands. For people with less time at their disposal, there is an opportunity to visit those 'Viennese Classics' the Haus am Michaelerplatz by Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner's Postsparkasse, which have been added to the summer programme.
