Learn traditional ways of building, stamp loam, assemble a lightweight frame, and design an African kiosk – all in the middle of the Museumsquartier!
Three Austrian architecture faculties with Design-Build projects have been invited to plan activities for the Az W courtyard to accompany the exhibition 'Think Global, Build Social! Bauen für eine bessere Welt'.
Our thanks to the following companies for their support:

The following workshops will be offered:
Duka La Mojo
Cooperative undertaking between the Az W and the association MOJO Fullscale Studio NPO
Colourful, packed with an enormous variety of goods and, above all, improvised – these are the most important characteristics of African market stalls. The reuse of various objects – many of which in our country are thrown on the garbage tip – for purposes very different to their original function is a special characteristic. In this context a kiosk, a so-called African duka (Kiswahili for shop) will be built, fitted-out, painted and furnished.
Lightweight Clay Construction
Cooperative undertaking between the Az W and the FH Spittal in Kärnten
Participants are given an insight into the different steps and work processes of an almost forgotten traditional construction method and learn how to handle the composite building material clay and straw. A kind of seating unit will be built in the Az W courtyard. Over the duration of the exhibition it will be possible to see how this clay-straw mass reacts to the influence of the weather.
Bending but not breaking
Cooperative undertaking between the Az W and the TU Vienna
Using timber for the most part, light, innovative and multi-purpose space-shaping structures will be built. The focus of the workshop is on rapid erection and dismantling, the reusability of the materials, and the different ways in which the outdoor space can be used. Under the motto “high-tech with low tech materials” a kind of canopy roof will be built in the Az W courtyard.
