Otto Wagner Viennamap

A cooperative project by the Architekturzentrum Wien, Kirche am Steinhof, Wagner:Werk Museum Postsparkasse and Wien Museum
Four Viennese cultural institutions have joined together to provide a new product for domestic visitors as well as tourists who are interested in the work of Otto Wagner. The institutions concerned are the Architekturzentrum Wien, Kirche am Steinhof, Wagner:Werk Museum Postsparkasse and Wien Museum.

The Otto Wagner Vienna Map is a project recently called into existence in a cooperation between the four institutions.

This new project provides an overview of the complete work of Otto Wagner, accompanying aficionados to the original sites developed by the Viennese Jugendstil architect.

The Otto Wagner map of Vienna costs an affordable EUR 4,00 and has been available at the four institutions from 2 May 2008.

In addition, a combination ticket is available for EUR 12,00, covering admission to following institutions/exhibitions:
  • 'a_show. Austrian Architecture in the 20th and 21st Centuries' permanent exhibition at the Architekturzentrum Wien
  • Kirche am Steinhof
  • Wagner:Werk Museum Postsparkasse
  • Otto Wagner Pavillon Karlsplatz (Spezialmuseum Wien Museum)

    Otto Wagner
The architect Otto Wagner (1841–1918) was one of the great trailblazers of Modern Viennese architecture. He promoted a contemporary architecture suited to embracing modern life. Wagner's designs combined fit for purpose construction technology with high aesthetic standards. Wagner created two key buildings in a context of European architecture around 1900 with the Postal Savings Bank (Postsparkasse) and the Kirche am Steinhof. As head architect for the Wiener Stadtbahn (rail line) he constructed an artwork that still dominates the cityscape of Vienna to this day. His apartment buildings left the rigidity of Historicism behind them in an exemplary and radically modern approach. The map of Vienna takes you to Otto Wagner's key buildings — from representative buildings in the city centre to the Nussdorfer Weir on the Danube.

    Otto Wagner Basic Tour
Otto Wagner stands for tradition and modernity. His work combines the end of the Ring Road era with the golden spring of Viennese Jugendstil and a pragmatic style unknown around 1900 that came to be referred to as Functionalism.

Start at the Architekturzentrum Wien: The permanent exhibition 'a_show. Austrian Architecture in the 20th and 21st Centuries' begins with Otto Wagner (1814–1918) and his buildings and ideas for the future for a metropolis around 1900.

At the Otto Wagner Pavilion on Karlsplatz the Wien Museum has a display of documentation showing the life and work of the great Austrian architect. St. Leopold am Steinhof, one of Wagner's key works and a key piece of church architecture, is presented as a model as well as the never built Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Stadtmuseum, which would have redefined Karlsplatz. And finally, the pavilion itself is one of Wagner's most famous Stadtbahn stations.

Stadtpark Stadtbahn/U4 Station: Wagner designed over 30 stations for the Vienna Stadtbahn, a rail network that stretches over 40 kilometres and dominates the image of the city. The Stadtpark station is still a part of the underground and suburban line rail networks today, as is almost the entire line built by Wagner around 1900.

Austrian Postal Savings Bank with a visit to the large Bankers Hall and the WAGNER:WERK MUSEUM. The museum, which opened in 2005, uses spaces previously not accessible to the public for exponents showing the competing projects submitted to the architecture competition of 1903 for a "k.u.k. Postsparkassenamt" (Postal Savings Bank). Wagner won the competition even though he did not remain within the parameters of the brief.
