Balkan Spotlight At The Architekturzentrum Wien

In 2009 the Az W is dedicating two exhibitions and a wide range of exciting events to the broad and complex topic of the Balkans. The aim is to redress the balance with a long overdue reflection on this sensitive and sometime taboo subject matter and to create the basis for a more profound engagement with the region.

The exhibition 'Bogdan Bogdanović. The Doomed Architect' at the Architekturzentrum Wien addresses the life and work of this most prominent of monument architects in the former multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia. Bogdanović was not merely an architect he was also an unconventional urbanologist, essayist, writer, philosopher and much more. Between 1951 and 1981 Bogdanović completed 19 commemorative sites throughout former-Yugoslavia as a symbol against war and persecution, which are all presented in the exhibition in the form of drawings, photographs, film footage and text.
'Balkanology. New Architecture and Urban Phenomena in Southeast Europe', the autumn exhibition at the Az W, presents projects in Belgrade, Zagreb, Kotor, Pristina and Tirana that exemplify the rapid process of transformation in the region. The little known exceptional buildings of modern Socialist Yugoslavia are shown in a dialogue with contemporary architecture.
