Movies In Wonderland: Architecture with/out Architects?
Architecture Film Festival in the Az W Courtyard, 13.08.2014 – 23.08.2014

Curated by wonderland – platform for European architecture and the Az W, in cooperation with frame[o]ut
and MuseumsQuartier / q21

Following on the success of the film nights last summer, this year “Movies in Wonderland“ and the Az W take a close look at the role of architecture – and consequently of those who make architecture – using current international films. Does architecture in fact still play a major role in present-day tendencies and developments? Does the master plan that everything must comply with still exist? And if not, what is then the issue? What constitutes the identity of a place? How much originality can be found in the copy of an entire village? Will the “star architect” be followed by the “citizen architect”? This summer the public again has an opportunity to discuss questions about the city and architecture with planners and film-makers from throughout the world.

Tickets: Admission free!

PROGRAMME

Wed, 13.08.2014, 8.30 pm (Opening)
Double Happiness, AT/CHI 2014, 70 min, R.: Ella Raidel, OmeU

Public discussion with film-maker Ella Raidel

“Double Happiness” is a filmed journey through China, where a clone of the picturesque town of Hallstatt in Upper Austria has been built as a real estate project. A duplicated happiness develops in parallel worlds of original and copy, reality and fiction, dream and reality.

Fri, 15.08.2014, 8.30 pm
Siesta, AT/PT 2012, 15 min, R.: David Krems, Hugo Furtado, OmeU

Unfinished Spaces, CU 2011, 86min, R.: Alysa Nahmias, Benjamin Murray, OmeU

Public discussion with Roland Krebs, urban managua, TU Vienna and David Krems, film maker

"Siesta" – a deserted beach in the morning, empty lanes, streets in which, from a distance, no sign of life can be seen. Something has happened. Barcelona is empty and the painted beach clock stands still.
"Unfinished Spaces" shows how, in a euphoric moment at the start of the Castro era in Cuba, an ambitious project for the national art schools was begun on the site of a former golf club. For three very young architects this was a unique opportunity to implement their ideas. But the euphoria soon dies down, everyday reality returns – the architects have to follow different paths. The buildings are neglected and left empty for a long time; finally they are rediscovered as visionary masterpieces of architecture.

Sat, 16.08.2014, 8.30 pm
Precise Poetry - Lina Bo Bardi´s Architecture, AT/GER 2013, 53 min., R.: Belinda Rukschcio, OmeU

Public discussion with film-maker Belinda Rukschcio

Through her architectural precision the Italo-Brazilian architect Lina Lo Bardi created poetry. What traces does the person of the architect leave behind in her own works and among her former staff? Together with the viewers Belinda Rukschcio undertakes a search in the form of interviews and also allows the buildings to speak themselves.

Wed, 20.08.2014, 8.30 pm
Lucien Hervé - photographer despite himself, BEL, 2013, 55 min, R: Gerrit Messiaen, OmeU

Public discussion (English) with film-maker Gerrit Messiaen

After seeing his photos of the Cité Radieuse Le Corbusier wrote to Hervé: "You have the soul of an architect and you understand something of how to look at architecture. Become my photographer.” A prize-winning portrait of Le Corbusier’s photographer Lucien Hervé, who after Corb’s death worked for other big names from Oscar Niemeyer to Kenzo Tange. The film distils the essence of the life and work of probably the most important architecture photographer of the 20th century and presents his view of the work of a “classic architect”.

Fri, 22.08.2014, 8.30 pm
Gran Horizonte - Around the Day in 80 Worlds, SUI 2013, 45 min, R: Urban Think Tank (Daniel Schwartz, Martin Andersson), OmeU

Empower Shack: Phumezo Tsibanto and Prototype 1.2, SUI 2013, 10 min, R.: Urban Think Tank, engl. OF

Public discussion (English) with Daniel Schwartz, Urban Think Tank

After “Torre David” last summer, “Movies In Wonderland” continues the dialogue with the UTT and this year shows the journey “Gran Horizonte”, which with a series of different places and micro-stories from all around the world draws the public along through a series of fascinating portrayals of people and the places they live in. A possible answer to the questions posed in “Gran Horizonte” is portrayed by the short video “Empower Shack”, an upgrading project by UTT in the South African townships.

Sat, 23.08.2014, 8.30 pm
Citizen Architect - Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio, USA 2010, 60 min, R.: Sam Wainwright Douglas, OmeU

Public discussion with Dietmar Steiner, Director Az W

Together with Dietmar Steiner, who tells us about his adventurous journey to the buildings by Rural Studio in the Alabama countryside, we follow the tracks of Samuel Mockbee, the founder of the Rural Studio, and of the idea that moved young students to use their skills in building for the community.
