Vienna is one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe. The largest area of urban development is aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside, located in the east of the city. In collaboration with the Architekturzentrum Wien, Wien 3420 Aspern Development AG invited a select group of architects to participate in an ideas competition for a site in the Lakeside Park Quarter in aspern. Seven architectural offices from across Europe were chosen to take part. The aim of the competition was to develop alternative approaches to the architecture of the city, with the emphasis on those themes that confront the city daily. The intention was, through the reinterpretation of Viennese traditions, to allow a wide-ranging debate about the future and the coherence of the city. The competition sought ideas for positive change and new forms for functionally neutral buildings.

Before the jury session the designs were presented and discussed during the Vienna Biennale 2015. The exhibition aspern INTERNATIONAL gave both the jury and the general public an opportunity to get to know the individual projects and the architects. Each architecture office presented its own project at a public symposium on 20.06.2015 and responded to the comments and questions from the jury, colleagues and the interested public. The content of these discussions then provided the basis for the jury’s decision, which was announced in July 2015 (please download the minutes of the jury meeting on the right). This experiment signalised change in the direction of participation, giving people a voice, and the democratisation of the city.

In the framework of the Vienna Biennale 2015 a number of guided tours through aspern Vienna`s Urban Lakeside are offered. In addition, the Architekturzentrum Wien organises children’s workshops on site.
