Das beste Haus 2015
Architecture prize 2015

With the sixth presentation of “Das beste Haus” by the s Bausparkasse in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Chancellery, the Architekturzentrum Wien, and with the involvement of the regional architecture institutions in Austria, this successful award is celebrating its 10th year in existence.

This year’s prize-winning projects were selected from a total of 129 projects submitted. A large number of the projects entered confirm that the single-family house continues to develop further. The houses presented convinced through their innovative concepts, high quality as living space, and the responsible way in which materials and the setting are handled. Among the 24 projects nominated for the prize this year there are ensembles of old and new, spatial experiments for special client needs, and unusual examples of joint and mixed use.

THE ARCHITECTURE PRIZE CELEBRATES ITS BIRTHDAY – 10 YEARS OF “DAS BESTE HAUS”
The popularity of the single-family house in the Austrian building landscape remains unchanged. Great importance is attached to criteria such as maximum freedom for design and development in terms of building as well as to independence and individuality. The relationship between these values and the responsible administration of development planning law by the state and the provinces is a complex one; increasing numbers of regions and landscapes in Austria are being shaped by the single family house as an architectural type.

The quality of the projects submitted in recent years and the response in the media clearly shows that this prize has been able to sustainably encourage initiatives in the area of the private house and to generate new ideas for single-family houses in the present and future development of the landscape. With their architectural quality these projects provide a model for those intending to build houses in the future, while also helping to anchor contemporary architecture in Austria.

The sixth presentation of “Das Beste Haus” architecture prize is based on the one hand on the exceptionally keen interest attracted by this competition since the very start. It also shows a clear commitment to encouraging young modern architecture in Austria that places people and the environment at the centre of its efforts; in addition a competition of this kind also offers a unique chance to provide best practice examples for future building projects and in this way to stimulate new, architecturally interesting concepts.

The prize money, which is donated by the s Bausparkasse and the Austrian Federal Chancellery, is 6.000€ per project (3.000€ each for the client and the architect).

This year, once again, the public choice award will be presented following the prize-giving.

10 YEARS – 54 BEST HOUSES
The tenth anniversary of our competition offers us an opportunity to compare architectural trends since 2005. You can look at all the prize-winning houses to date in the anniversary edition of the catalogue. Built diversity as reflected by prize-winning living space in the form of the single-family house.

DAS BESTE HOUSE TOURS AUSTRIA
Through their quality and diversity the award-winning buildings aim to provide ideas and stimuli for those intending to build their own house. For this reason, in collaboration with the architectural institutions in the federal states, the prize-winning houses will be shown in various Austrian Sparkassen and in other selected locations. As part of a series of events an opportunity will be offered to discuss with specialists the development of architecture in the area of single-family house, the intelligent use of materials, responsible handling of the surrounding landscape, and optimized energy concepts.
