One Room for Five. Twenty Architectural Years
Exhibition: 03.09. – 12.10.2015, Architekturzentrum Wien Opening: Wed, 02.09.2015, 7pm Press Conference: Wed, 02.09.2015, 11am

In 1995 the architects Dieter Henke, Marta Schreieck, RLP Rüdiger Lainer + Partner, Walter Stelzhammer and Albert Wimmer presented their approach to architecture in the exhibition "One Room for Five". Twenty years later, the exhibition format is being applied once again to examine their work and its impact, and pose a number of questions. "One Room for Five. Twenty Architectural Years" looks behind the scenes and gives an insight into the architects' working methods and reference systems. The focus is on the creative process through which the projects develop. How do the architects bring their favourite themes and approaches from one project to the next, and refine them? What kind of roundabout paths and sidestepping does this involve?

The results and positions of the five architects are very different, although they all share the context of Vienna and the conditions of production in a growing city with restricted resources. The architecture offices Henke Schreieck, Rüdiger Lainer und Partner, Walter Stelzhammer, and Albert Wimmer ZT GmbH have had a decisive impact on the architectural history of the City of Vienna. Over the course of the last 20 years the five architects in four offices have become four offices with a total of twelve office partners, representing a heterogenous spectrum of architectural production. Henke Schreieck Architekten worked for half of the observation period on one piece of city, Rüdiger Lainer and Partner are only just beginning to realise an important part of their vision for one of Europe's key urban expansion zones, Walter Stelzhammer varies on and refines the theme of homes with atriums, and there hardly seems to be a major project in Austria without the involvement of Albert Wimmer ZT-GmbH's.

The exhibition is curated and designed by Heidi Pretterhofer and Dieter Spath. The makers of the exhibition ask questions of the architects 'on display' and their impact in the historical context, and place the two in relation to one another. The exhibition design itself is a spatial hybrid depicting the twenty years of architecture spatially in twelve different formats and displays. A display of images provides an initial overview of the projects, and a map of Vienna provides the playing field for locating the completed projects. Alongside the architectural works, insights and inspiration from the sites of the production are also shown, such as a small library of books of personal significance to the architects themselves, as well as samples of materials and other treasures.

The architects become permanent visitors to their own exhibition. Approachable and present, they are holding workshops at the Az W during the run of the exhibition, for all age groups. On the programme are Drawing with Rüdiger, Watercolouring with Albert, Photographing with Marta and Dieter, and Speaking with Walter.
