Az W Photo Award 2012
Hands-On Urbanism. The Right to Green

The Az W Photo Award goes into its 3rd round... Following the successful establishment of the first two awards in 2009 and 2010, this year participants are called upon to go in search of green space in the city. The upcoming spring exhibition 'Hands-On Urbanism 1850 – 2012. The Right to Green' (15.03 – 25.06.2012) is dedicated to the history of the idea of appropriating land in urban space. The exhibition tells the alternative history of hands-on urbanism — international case studies from Vienna, Hong Kong, Havanna, Quito, New York or Leipzig show what bottom-up urban development can look like. Self-organised settlements, self-build and self-sufficiency with gardens are a part of towns and cities all over the world. What do settlements, community gardens, neighbourhood gardens, allotments or informal urban expansion look like today? What can we learn from them? What are the roles played by architects, planners, activists, artists, settlers or gardeners in this process?

Jury
The jury is to nominate a shortlist from the works submitted, from which 10 entries are to be selected.
