Vienna is one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe. The largest area of urban development is aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside, located in the east of the city. In collaboration with the Architekturzentrum Wien, Wien 3420 aspern development AG invited a select group of architects to participate in a competition for a site in the Lakeside Park Quarter in aspern.
Seven architectural offices from across Europe have been chosen to take part. The aim of the competition was to develop alternative approaches to the architecture of the city, with the emphasis on those themes that confront the city daily. The intention was, through the reinterpretation of Viennese traditions, to allow a wide-ranging debate about the future and the coherence of the city. The competition sought ideas for positive change and new forms for functionally neutral buildings. The results are presented and discussed during the Vienna Biennale 2015 at the Architekturzentrum Wien and in aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside.
The jury convened following the presentations, on 22 June.
In the comparative study of the projects submitted, which were without exception on a high level architecturally and as urban developments, the jury reached the following conclusion:
The projects by Atelier Kempe Thill Architects and Planners, by Helen & Hard, and by Hild und K Architekten were recommended for realisation. All three projects responded best and in a very individual manner to the specified requirements, according to the jury's report. The drive to try new directions in the development of a multifunctional town house is most clearly evident here. These are three strong and clear proposals, credible in architectural approach and in their functional neutrality, and would contribute added value to the overall urban development. The project by Cino Zucchi Architetti (with ifdesign) was also recommended for further development. This design might not have achieved the consistency of the abovementioned projects in responding to the specified requirements but was convincing for its other qualities.
