With the exhibition 'Un Jardin d'Hiver presents. Bottom up. Building for a better World. Nine Projects for Johannesburg', the autumn programme at the Architekturzentrum Wien is once again focussing on the theme of aesthetic and social engagement as one of the essential considerations in architecture education and practise. In 2001 the Architekturzentrum Wien presented an exhibition by the now legendary Rural Studio, called into life by Samuel Mockbee. Architectural aesthetic as social engagement is one of the issues in participatory planning and building. While the problems associated with "scenario-based design and planning" are being addressed in a post-colonial context.
The exhibition presents nine projects planned between 2004-2006 by students at the architecture faculties of Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna Universities of Technology, the Aachen RWTH, the Institut für Raum und Design, Architektur, at the Kunstuniversität Linz as well as Kuchl Fachhochschule, some of which have already been realised. S2arch is a network, initiated by Christoph Chorherr, of local public institutions, private not-for-profit organisations as well as international sponsors. The focus of the initiative is on educational and integrative facilities, kindergartens, schools and day-care centres.
Curator, exhibition design and project coordination: Johannes Porsch
