Icons

The second series of Archicards is quite simply called 'Ikonen'/Icons. This series is once more dedicated to significant domestic architecture photographers and their work, work which effects the way we look at architecture. 'Icons', it sounds like a presentation of images aimed at inclusion in the canon. Or: the seen.

'Icons', the word always crops up in a context of buildings and images of them when they appear to be embedded in an axis of public focus, embedded in a cultural context of leading examples, in something very particular, special.

However in this series of icons this axis, this construction from outside, is inverted, so to speak. The private view is at its other end. The subjective image is traced by the viewfinder and the materials involved to provide an image of a masterly building selected by the photographers themselves. They depart from the usual sight of the building, leading the viewer into the singularity of personal likes and preferences.

These photographers' icons go beyond the reproduction of leitmotifs, not being restricted to the familiar as suggested by one's inner eye at the mention of a particular style of architecture or architects. Instead, these photographs come closer to capturing an instant of special interest and a moment of transformation in images of expressive means and styles.

The icon develops afresh through the eye and the particular quality of the lens, its signature. Transformed by the task of photographing the architecture, this parade of leading buildings once again shows to what a considerable extent our perception of modernity is shaped by the media, and the power that can be generated by an alternative view. It awakens a new interest in 'Icons' that appeared to have long been filed away in the archives of familiar sights. (Georg Schöllhammer)
