Introduction
How could somebody possibly come up with the idea of producing a postcard book nowadays? In an age in which a simple text message already seems antiquated and young people are again turning their backs on Facebook, it seems most unlikely that the next hype will be the postcard. In fact almost impossible. The postcard is an endearing greeting from a different era and a kind of journey in time. It is like a short trip back to the final decade of the century before last, when people regularly sent postcards from their holidays to friends, perhaps also with the idea of awakening a certain envy. The postcard had its first heyday with the development of rail and bus travel. Which provides us with a historical basis for the connection to the bus shelters of BUS:STOP Krumbach. At the start of the 20th century the bus and the postcard formed an unbeatable dream team for travellers. In terms of transport the bus opened up entire regions. And it did not only access regions, it also reached people. You did not have to be rich or excessively adventurous to embark with others on a journey to nearby or more distant destinations. Admittedly, a certain spirit of adventure was required – but it was also always rewarded. At every destination on the journey, at every bus stop, there was a “sight” to be admired. What was regarded as “worth seeing” was given the special tourism honour of being made the subject of a postcard. Art works, landscape and regional culture were being photographed, reproduced and mailed as postcards in enormous amounts. The travel destination itself embarks on a journey – in the form of a postcard!
And surely that is a lovely invitation to the Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg. But please take the bus!
