The Annual Press Conference at the Architekturzentrum Wien

Wednesday 22. January 2014, at 11am in the Az W library

The programme for 2014, a resumé of the jubilee year 2013 and further developments presented by Dietmar Steiner / Director of the Az W, Karin Lux / Executive Director of the Az W and Hannes Pflaum / President of the Board.

The Architekturzentrum Wien is looking to the future — despite the financial constraints of recent years, numerous exceptional projects were completed and exhibitions held, including in cooperation and with the support of strong partners. So too, in the future the Az W will be setting increasing store on cooperations, with these partners' support to define the tasks and projects of the next 20 years.

Overall last year, 15 exhibitions (3 of them as “Guests in the Az W” and 3 touring exhibition) as well as 29 events were organised in a range of formats. In 2013 over 450 groups were given theme-based guided tours by the Az W educational team. In addition, a total of 84 guided tours specially conceived for groups of experts and delegations or to accompany exhibitions and cooperations were given within Vienna. The diversity of the programme, especially in the area of mediation and education, shows how strongly the Az W has developed in this sector.

The Az W is once again open to the public on 365 days of the year in 2014, and again offering numerous exhibitions, a series of specially developed event formats and a comprehensive educational programme:

The exhibition 'Think Global, Build Social! Bauen für eine bessere
Welt' from 15.03 to 30.06.2014 is dedicated to the issue of the social responsibility of contemporary architecture. 'Think Global, Build Social!' shows current examples of an alternative, socially engaged architecture that aims to improve living conditions for people in less privileged regions of the world with as little financial investment as possible but a great deal of personal initiative and creativity. The exhibition at the Architekturzentrum Wien is supplemented by the presentation of projects with Austrian participants.

The summer exhibition 'Europe's Best Buildings. Mies van der Rohe Award 2013' (10.07 - 15.09.2014) presents, for the third time, the most innovative contemporary architecture projects of the past two years. The Mies van der Rohe award 2013 went to a building completed by the Danish architecture office Henning Larsen in collaboration with the Icelandic office Batteríiö and the artist Olafur Elíasson, the new Harpa - Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre opened in 2011. A total of 335 works from 37 countries were submitted. The touring exhibition is supplemented at the Az W by nominations with Austrian participants.

Alongside the temporary exhibitions, there are the recently updated permanent exhibition 'a_show. Austrian Architecture in the 20th and 21st Centuries' and numerous smaller exhibitions to see, as well as numerous events and educational projects, accompanying cultural services, like the reading library in the historic Oktogon building, the redesigned online database of buildings and the online Encyclopedia of Architects.
