Europe's Best Buildings. The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture
Mies van der Rohe Award 2015

AN EXHIBITION BY THE FUNDACIÓ MIES VAN DER ROHE – BARCELONA
OPENING: WED, 08.06.2016, 7PM
PRESS CONFERENCE: WED, 08.06.2016, 11AM

Every two years the exhibition Europe's Best Buildings. The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. Mies van der Rohe Award places a focus on exceptional visionary architecture, and has become a crowd-puller over recent years. For the 4th time the exhibition of this prestigious architecture prize is on show at the Architekturzentrum Wien. Since its inception in 1988 the prize-money of € 60,000 has been awarded to such famous names as David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor or Rem Koolhaas. To promote young talent and architects at the outset of their careers the Emerging Architect Special Mention prize was called into life, promoting ambitious, up-and-coming architecture.

Five finalists were selected from the 420 projects nominated at 279 locations in Europe in 2015 — the eminent international jury, chaired by Cino Zucchi, was ultimately most convinced by the Philharmonic Hall Szczecin, Poland, by the architects Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga. The coveted Emerging Architect Special Mention was awarded to ARQUITECTURA-G for the Casa Luz project in Cilleros, Spain. The other finalists are: Ravensburg Art Museum, Ravensburg DE, arch.: Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei / Danish Maritime Museum, Helsingør DK, arch.: BIG — Bjarke Ingels Group / Antinori Winery, Bargino IT, arch.: Archea Associati / Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, London UK, arch.: O’Donnell + Tuomey

The design of the exhibition has changed for the first time since the instigation of the Mies van der Rohe Award to include many new features, such as models, videos and original material. The 40 shortlisted projects and the 23 nominations with Austrian participants await.

A catalogue covering all 420 nominated projects is available at the Az W for the duration of the exhibition.

PRIZE WINNER
Philharmonic Hall Szczecin
Szczecin, Poland

Architects: Barozzi / Veiga, Fabrizio Barozzi (IT) and Alberto Veiga (ES)

The new building for the philharmonic orchestra houses an auditorium for symphonic music designed for 1000 visitors, a chamber music room for 200 visitors and a multifunctional space for exhibitions and conferences, as well as having an expansive foyer. The illuminated glass façade permits a range of impressions, allowing the building to radiate as a lighting element. The stringence of the exterior and the simple elegance inside contrast with the expxressivity of the large hall and the concert hall decorated with gold leaf. The floor plan is dominated by an outer circle for services. While everything is orientated around the large hall and the chamber music room inside, the ring serves as a link between the building and its surroundings.

FINALISTS
• Ravensburg Art Museum, Ravensburg DE, arch.: Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei
• Danish Maritime Museum, Helsingør DK, arch.: BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group
• Antinori Winery, Bargino IT, arch.: Archea Associati
• Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, London UK, arch.: O’Donnell + Tuomey

EMERGING ARCHITECT SPECIAL MENTION
Casa Luz
Cilleros, Spanien

Architects: ARQUITECTURA-G, Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Aitor Fuentes, Igor Urdampilleta (ES)

The client of Casa Luz wanted a house with plenty of natural light and a strong relationship to outdoors and the courtyard. The solution is based on local skills and know-how and the use of natural materials, which were adapted to fit the budget and to suit the geographical context. Each of the floors arranged at different levels around the courtyard has a specific function. The courtyard is dominated by a birch tree so the living room and kitchen lie between the green within and the garden. Thanks to stairs in the living room and kitchen the bedrooms situated between the courtyard and the main façade do not have to be walked through. The intense red ceramic and the strong green of the birch dominate the place, and the light lends the material different shades of colour throughout the day.
