With the exhibition to mark the 100th birthday of Eugen Wörle, the Architekturzentrum Wien pays homage to one of the great personalities of Viennese architecture. Welcome Address Dietmar Steiner, Direktor Az W Introduction Monika Platzer, Kuratorin der Ausstellung On Eugen Wörle Franz Kiener, Architekt Trained under Clemens Holzmeister at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Wörle entered into a working partnership with the former Max Fellerer, a student of Hoffmann. The result was, inter alia, numerous retail outlets and commercial buildings, the hotel am Tulbingerkogel, the Haashaus and, his best known building to this day, the Am Gänsehäufel outdoor bathing facility. During the postwar reconstruction Wörle/Fellerer were commissioned with the restoration of the Parlament building, where his sensitive handling of the historical substance and his 'discrete' and elegant redesign of the assembly chamber clearly show his approach to architecture. Wörle adhered to a pragmatic modernity that always reacted to the existing situation. In 2007 the Zentralvereinigung der Architekten Österreichs, of which Wörle had long been the president, donated his archives to the Az W. This exhibition should now provide insights into the oeuvre of Eugen Wörle on the basis of selected projects, and stimulate an updated look at his work. |
