Feeling models, touching surfaces and experiencing the atmosphere acoustically was the basis for an afternoon that a group of about 15 blind and visually impaired people spent on a guided tour of Karl Marx Hof by the Architekturzentrum Wien.
Equipped with floor plans in Braille and scale tactile models the scouting expedition began with a visit to Kurt Tremel. Chair of the tenants' commission at Karl Marx Hof and long-time resident of the most famous Viennese social housing development shared his personal childhood memories of life and living in Karl Marx Hof shortly after its completion, providing a first insight into its chequered history.
In the following guided tour of the courtyards the architectural features and the history of the housing development and its construction were outlined in detail. Tactile models of the entire complex as well as of individual apartments helped the participants to form a better impression of the overall scale and proportions of the spaces described to them on the guided tour.
We offer another tour with the same concept, guidung you through the Museumsquartier in the heart of Vienna.
