Experience and design your space

On the invitation of the first ICAM med Conference in Istanbul, the Architekturzentrum Wien held a workshop in collaboration with Arkitera Architecture on public square design, 'Experience and Design your Space'.

Thirteen pupils of the KASIMPASA school participated in this three day project to redesign their own school yard. The results (sketches and working models) were presented in a small exhibition and then analysed and discussed by a jury comprised of prominent individuals (Antonello Alici/DARDU Universita Politecnica delle Marche, George Arbid/Lebanon, Sevin Yildiz/Arkitera Archtecture Center, Manuel Blanco/Universidad Politecnica de Madrid).

The workshop began with a presentation on the subject of designing public squares to familiarise the participants with the various design possibilities available. This was followed by a group discussion of the participants' favourite locations as a basis for working out their requirements and wishes. In the afternoon an analysis was made of the site to be planned using a role-playing game. Questioned was, for example, what are the advantages and disadvantages facing different people (a blind person, an old man with a stick, a family with four children, three students who want a quiet place to study etc.) who use the square?

Following this the location was measured, first by pacing it and then more accurately with a tape measure. Photographs were taken and sketches were made to serve as the basis for the planning process.

The schoolyard was analysed in the group back at the school. From the list of requirements, the wish for seating proved particularly strong, which has been entirely absent to date. Split into groups, the participants re-planned the different places in the square with the aid of sketches and working models, redesigning it according to their own ideas.

The Young Brain group, commentary by Antonello Alici

Form: Interesting meeting of simple forms.
Function: Nice answer to the need of advertising and attracting attention.

Concept: Interactive and playing object, very interesting.
Model: It is the most difficult construction of a turning tower, very well done.

The Young Brain group, commentary by Manuel Blanco
Form: A big machine in movement that transforms a corner into a cultural space.
Function: It solves the problems of showing a lot of things very well.
Concept: A good idea to use a mechanism to make architecture.

The Rainbow group, commentary by Manuel Blanco

Form: A very poetic form that reminds me of an abstract Matisse painting.

Function: It works very well for the interaction of people and the creation of groups as well as isolated individuals.

Model: Very colourful and an accurate way of presenting the idea.

The Unknown group, commentary by Antonello Alici

Form: Excellent! The benches provide many combinations of places.

Function: The same form provides different functions and makes the square interesting.
Concept: The result is very joyful and light – Please build it!

Model: Working models and the final model are very well done. The combination of materials is very good.

The Unknown group, commentary by Manuel Blanco

Form: The form chosen with a powerful image fits perfectly to the architecture of Greg Lynn.
Function: At the same time it is a perfect translation of how you fit in space made with a unique solution.
Concept: An original idea followed to the limits and well developed.
Model: The system of modelling has been used to develop the idea perfectly well.
P.S. Go to architecture school.

The Free Enterprise group, commentary by Manuel Blanco

Form: A very good formal solution to the scale that reminds one of the clever solutions of Rietveld.

Function: It works very well for the purpose intended.
Concept: Translation of function to a beautiful object.

Model: Well made with a nice selection of colours and degree of definition. They know what they want to show and they did it.
